Fashion Photography

You can find it in books and magazines, ad’s and billboards, online and in films. Fashion photography has been around since 1856 when a portfolio of Countess de Castiglione, Virginia Oldoini was created.

The first fashion photographer was Adolphe Bruan who was the first to shoot a fashion model.  Fashion photography is now used as a way to advertise for companies or brands by showcasing models that are wearing clothing, jewelry, glasses, hairstyles and other fashion accessories. The photos are often glamorized using different styles of lighting; dramatic make-up a techniques, creative and unique poses as well as props and backgrounds.

The first magazines to use fashion photography were French magazines Les Mode and La Mode Pratique. It can now be found in magazines all over the world such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, or Allure.  It takes a lot of time and work to capture the images you see in today’s fashion photography. Fashion photographers are responsible for making sure their images turn out the way they need them to and are required to work with multiple people in order to achieve proper lighting, make-up, outfits, moods and overall results.

Some popular fashion photographer of our time include Horst Diekgerdes, Stephane Sednaoui, Mikael Jansson, Peter Lindbergh and Nick Knight.

Fundamentals Of Lighting Studio Assignment:

As the sister of an OHL goal tender (Kenny Appleby) I am fortunate to have access to multiple young good looking men that are use to paparazzi and posing for photographs with fans. So I couldn’t help but ask for a favour from him and one of his Oshawa General team mates Michael Dal Colle. A bit shy at first the boys warmed up to the camera once we got some music playing in the studio and the hazing jokes to one another were done. Some asked and wonder how I was comfortable taking shots of my half nude younger brother… He is my brother is the only answer. After growing up together and living in the same house I have on numerous occasions seen him walking around in his boxers or pyjamas with a top of or even at the beach. The only difference between those moments and being in the studio is I’m doing my job and doing what I love. I find that it was actually easy using a my brother as one of the models because he listened to my orders pretty well and i was comfortable asking him do do what ever I needed him to do. Here are some of my favourites from this session.

Photography Technique Assignment:

A few months ago back in september my classmates and I had the opportunity to go to Parkwood Estates to shoot some photo’s. While we were there we had to practice 12 different photography techniques taught to us in class. For anyone who doesn’t know anything about Parkwood Estates it is located in Oshawa, Ontario. It is the old mansion was built between 1915-17, shortly before Robert Samuel McLaughlin became the President of General Motors Canada and purchased the house with his family. The mansion has been the location of multiple movie and tv show filming locations and can be recognized in X-Men, Murdoch Mysteries, Billy Madison and Nikita to name a few. The location is know for it’s history, mansion, gardens and fountain pool. Here are a few photo’s I took while at Parkwood. If your interested in viewing the Mansion which is now a Museum or if you want to learn more about it visit: http://www.parkwoodestate.com
